What is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) ?

CDT is an advanced management and care program considered the gold standard for managing lymphedema and other related conditions. Lymphatic drainage massage, when combined with bandaging and compression sleeves, is often part of a comprehensive treatment known as Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). This approach is commonly used to manage conditions like lymphedema, where fluid buildup occurs due to a compromised lymphatic system, especially post cancer care.

How the Process Works:

1. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Performed first in the session, MLD uses specialized, gentle massage techniques to stimulate lymphatic circulation. The therapist carefully moves lymph fluid from congested areas toward functioning lymph nodes, reducing swelling and discomfort. This step is crucial for "decongesting" the affected limb and preparing it for compression.

2. Compression Bandaging

After the MLD massage, multi-layer, low-stretch bandages are applied to maintain the reduction in swelling achieved during the session. These bandages exert gradual pressure to prevent fluid from re-accumulating and assist in softening hardened tissues caused by lymphedema (a condition known as fibrosis).

3. Compression Garment Fitting

Once the swelling stabilizes, custom compression garments, such as sleeves, stockings, or gloves, are fitted to the patient. These garments must be worn regularly to help maintain the reduced swelling and prevent further complications.

4. Skin Care

Proper skincare is an essential aspect of CDT. Patients are guided on how to keep the skin clean and moisturized to prevent infections like cellulitis, which are common in lymphedema-affected areas.

5. Exercise

Gentle, low-impact exercises tailored to the patient's condition are incorporated to enhance lymphatic flow. These exercises promote movement and circulation in the affected limb, complementing the other components of CDT.

Thank you for taking the time to review this information that can change a person’s life suffering from chronic lymphedema. If you know someone that is suffering from one of the conditions listed, please pass on this valuable information so they can access the program.

Please call to book your appointment or have your physician or surgeon contact the clinic to initiate the referral process.
